Its name comes from the mythological Canopus, who was the navigator at sea for Menelaus, king of Sparta. The Māori had several different names for Canopus amongst which ”Atutahi” which meant ’stand-alone’. As the second brightest solitary star after/to Sirius, it served as an important stellar compass to guide the ancestors of the Māori safely across the Pacific Ocean to their new homeland.
